How to Buy a Laptop for Note Taking [Buying Guide]
Notes’ taking is an effective way to record important points in a lecture or meeting. It helps you to go through a long topic in minutes.
In exam time, when students have to revise books, notes help them go through whole books in a few hours.
So, for students, note-taking is important and helpful.
If you do not like the traditional note-taking way, technology got your back.
You can buy a laptop to keep notes. But buying a good laptop for note-taking is not easy. As you do not know what plays a role in making a laptop perfect for the job.
We are here to help you, to make you learn the basic yet important aspects of a laptop for note-taking.
2 in 1 Laptop or Traditional Notebook?
I have gone through all major forums to learn to confuse the most for those looking to buy a laptop for note-taking. The biggest issue for them was, choosing between a traditional notebook and 2 in 1 laptop.
Actually, 2 in 1 laptops are relatively a new type of device for most of us. Most of us might not even have used or seen one.
Changes are hard and to adapt to those changes is tough. But, it is good to go through a few 2 in 1 laptop reviews and see what features they offer.
I would like to say that for note-taking and studies (except engineering and IT professional) 2 in 1 laptop are good. They offer versatility and portability.
Though, Chromebooks are not that powerful to go through complex apps or operations.
But they can handle normal operations a student needs to go through.
Windows 2 in 1 laptops are expensive, but they are ideal for those with complex processing needs.
In total, my weight is for 2 in 1 laptop. They are good for average students and helpful in taking notes directly on the screen or with typing.
These are some other important areas you need to have a look at before buying a laptop for note-taking.
CPU
For note-taking or a general laptop for the student; you do not require a high-ended latest processor. But, it should be good and fast enough to run through important programs.
You need to get a laptop that easily runs the most used software such as MS Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and One Note.
For the task at hand, we would like to recommend i5. This is the maximum you should go with. You may go one step lower and can opt for i3, it will also be good for the job.
Or if you like AMD processors, Ryzen 3 or 4-series can fill the bill easily. Chromebooks are not designed to run heavy apps. Most of the work is based on online apps and data, it is pointless to discuss their processor here.
RAM
Notes-taking is not a complex process. You can get this done with an average laptop. A laptop with 4GB of RAM can easily make you save notes and edit them easily.
But, note-taking will not be the only thing you will be doing or handling.
You want to buy a laptop that helps in your studies and caters to the loads a student needs to go through.
So, it will be good to have 8GB RAM, for the safe side, otherwise, 4GB is enough.
Portability
Students have to carry their laptops all day long. They need to take lectures, roam around in classrooms, and discuss their projects in groups.
So, it is good that the laptop should be portable. A portable laptop without being putting its weight helps them to take around.
So, yes, it is one of the core features you should look at. Other than being lightweight, it should share a thin profile and small footprints that fit into a small backpack easily.
Display
If you love taking notes directly on the screen like a pen on paper, it is imperative to have a laptop with a touch display.
Other than being a touch display, the display should be bright. It should offer high-resolution content, to help watch video lectures or read books online without hurting the eyes.
So, yes, look for a good display. It should be a minimum FHD display if possible and gets along with ultra HD.
Battery Life
A laptop that drains the battery fast can never be an ideal candidate for students’ laptops. It must offer a long runtime, at least 8 hours. That’s why we only chose those laptops with good extended battery backup.
Other than holding a good battery backup, they should support a fast battery charging mechanism. Like, in less than an hour, at least a 60-per cent battery should be juiced up.
