Laptops Under $500 For Home Use

Looking into buying a brand-new laptop for home use? There are dozens of options that you can buy but buying a good laptop for home use for under $500 is what makes this hunt difficult.

We need laptops for everything these days. From watching movies to paying bills, attending classes to business meetings, laptops are everywhere.

We are living Past-Covid age and things are not the same as before. Covid changed everything, distance learning is at its top these days, OTT platforms are on the edge of success, and laptops and computers’ dependability and requirement have almost gone double.

Although we have a plethora of laptops options to choose from in my view, laptop buying has become way more complex than before.

Now, all laptops look the same, and to learn about them either you will have to review and go in-depth or take the help of your expert friend.

Well, not all are as lucky as you, or maybe you too have no acquaintance to help you in picking a good laptop for home use under a budget price.

Do not worry, we have done complete research, and gathered top-of-the-line laptops which are great for home computing tasks such as streaming, browsing, emailing, book reading, compiling, and many other casual operations.

Best Laptops for Home use under $500.

  1. HP Pavilion Laptop
  2. Acer Aspire 5
  3. Dell Inspiron 15 3000
  4. ASUS VivoBook 15
  5. Lenovo Chromebook Flex 5
  6. New Microsoft Surface Go 2
  7. Lenovo IdeaPad 3
  8. HP Chromebook
  9. HP 15-dy1036nr

Before we get into the detailed and in-depth reviews of the top models, it would be great if we narrow down your options and make you learn which laptop suits you the most.

Things to Consider Before Buying a Cheap Laptop for Home Use?

Let’s recall it again, we are here to research a good laptop for home use. The laptops that we are going to review would be good at handling regular computing operations.

These are not for high-end operations or professional computing tasks such as Virtualization, civil engineering tasks, electrical engineering, and many others.

These are for regular home operations such as emailing, streaming, compiling docs, writing a research paper, binge-watching movies, and many others.

So, let’s discuss the features or specs a laptop for under $500 should have.

What type of Laptop do You want?

This section will narrow your options down. We will mention different types of laptops and help you pick the one that suits you the most.

  • Regular Laptops:

These are the laptops that focus more on use than looks and style. Mostly they are non-ultrabooks, or what you can say, hard to carry around.

Their specs would be good but looks-wise or their aesthetic appeals would not be that impressive.

Gaming Laptops that Look Professional

  • Ultrabooks:

These are thin compact laptops that are fast and sport higher resolution, faster processors, faster SSDs, and good battery life.

But for the price under 500, we can’t buy a superb ultrabook, you at least will have to spend 800 to buy an ultrabook. Experts recommend at least 1000 dollars for ultrabook buying.

If you have to travel a lot, to school, college, office, campus, or for business, we recommend you buy an ultrabook.

  • Convertible 2-in-1 Laptop:

Convertible laptops are amazing, you get the best of both worlds. You can transform them into tablets anytime you like.

Transferring into a tablet makes them helpful for reading books, magazines, blogs, doing drawings, streaming, or binge-watching.

Do not worry convertible laptops are not expensive, you can buy a good convertible laptop for under 500 dollars, and if you prefer only touchscreens, there are also touchscreen laptops under the budget price range to help you pick the best.

  • Chromebooks

Chromebooks are in trend these days. From seniors to college students, or schoolboys like them. The reasons are obvious, they are cheap (under $100 even), they are easy to use, faster, and ChromeOS enhances their use and accessibility.

If your daily tasks are not more than browsing, emailing, compiling, zoom meetings, google Room lectures, light games playing like Fortnite, Minecraft, Roblox, then I recommend you buy a good Chromebook even for home computing.

  • Gaming Laptops

Gaming is the best use of laptops. But for a price under $500, it is hard to grab a good gaming laptop. You at least spend 1000-1200 or use your desktop to play games.

For 500 dollars though you can’t buy a full gaming machine with all nuts and bolts.

Processor

Processor the brain of the computer and the most important part requires special attention of you before you give a short. It is the easiest and the best way to look at how powerful a laptop is, and capable.

Processors are made by either Intel or AMD. AMD processors are getting attention these days due to their budget price and higher performance but Intel is still the king of processors.

For budget users looking for a laptop for home use, it is hard to grab a high-end or latest processor. For them, in my view, a core i3 processor or in some rare cases core i5 processor is the best grab. For AMD processors though, go for Ryzen 5 processors, for this price we can easily get a Ryzen 5 series processor.

RAM and Storage:

Storage is a personal preference, if you like to store lots of movies or files, you would require good storage.

But keep in mind, buy an SSD storage laptop for even home use, SSDs add a boost to your performance and make your laptop at least 4 times faster.

About the RAM, I think for home use it is good to have an 8GB RAM laptop because for Windows laptops 4GB is the very least, still, if you do not do multitask and open lots of browsing tabs, 4GB RAM is good to go.

Yes, for Chromebooks though 4GB RAM is enough, even some cheap Chromebooks come with 2GB RAM. For Chromebooks, as they run ChromeOS, 2GB efficiently handles regular computing.

If you buy a Chromebook look for SD Card in it, as long as HDMI ports. A good number of ports enhances your efficiency in helping you connect multiple computer peripherals at one time.

Screen Resolution and Display

Do not go with an HD screen resolution laptop, or you will suffer. It’s ok if you have purchased a cheap laptop or Chromebook under 100 dollars to come with an HD screen, but for a 500 dollars laptop, I do not think you should ever switch with HD screen resolution.

I want to go one step ahead if you like to watch videos, or binge-watch web series, spend most of the time gazing at the screen, and better go with an Ultra HD screen resolution laptop.

About the screen size, I recommend 13-inches or 14 inches for laptops. They are compact, small, lightweight, last longer, and are easier to travel with.

If you have been using 17 inches laptops, do not go with 13 inches because for you it will be hard to adjust with a way too smaller a screen.

Battery Life

As you would be using your laptop at home, I do not think you would look at the battery performance or battery hours like students or digital nomads or those who travel a lot would look.

Still, a good battery life gives you the freedom, to take your device anywhere you like, from the bedroom to the lawn or TV lounge.

Well, if you have to type a lot then surely the keyboard should be another aspect you should pay attention to. But for home computing, an average keyboard can fill the bill.

Let’s have our detailed reviews of cheap laptops for home use.

Best Laptops for Home Use Under $500 Reviews (2022)

The first product on our list is none other than the HP laptop. Hp has produced amazing laptops for an affordable price range, and this stunning-looking laptop comes under $500 price and features astounding specs range to help you do just anything.

It comes powered with an 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1125G4 Processor. It is a quad-core processor, that goes up to 3.7 GHz clock speed. If you compare the processing power and task handling capacity, this processor easily beats up Beats i7-1065G7 processor.

Just check the benchmarks, I am sure you would love this processor too.

In RAM and storage what I loved about this laptop is its wide range of RAM and storage option to choose from. The specs range starts from 8GB RAM to up to 32GB RAM and storage from 128GB SSD to 1TB SSD.

But for home computing, I recommend 256GB SSD would be more than sufficient. And in RAM, the model I used comes with 16GB RAM, you can go with 8GB RAM if you do not have to handle complex computing operations.

Its FHD display is also as good as you expect from an HP laptop. Though the bezels on the top and bottom are a little bigger than today’s laptops such as Dell XPS 13, still for the price, I find it a winner.

The display produces clearer and sharper images, 250-nits of brightness, anti-glare panels, and a 45%NTSC colour gamut range making it as crisper and sharper as you need for binge-watching.

I would not say that the laptop is enough good to be used outdoors, you know glares in using a laptop direct in the sunlight make it hard to view.

Its good range of connectivity ports including USB Type-C, 2 USB Type-A, and one HDMI port, makes it good to connect computer peripherals you like. It is 4 USB Ports laptops, enough for home computing or regular use at home.

Believe me, I tried hard to find its negative sides, but I couldn’t. It is such an amazing laptop for the price that everyone likes and adores this model.

If you are looking for a Core i5 processor under a cheap price range, this is the laptop you should get your hands on.

Keep in mind, it is one of the top-rated laptops on Amazon, it has everything not only for home use, but for college students, PA school students, grad school students, medical students, and many other discipline students.

Acer Aspire 5 laptop comes powered with a Core i5 processor. It is hard to grab a core i5 processor laptop under the $500 price range, but Acer gives you this offer, the processor goes up to 3.7 GHz clock speed due to turbo-boosting.

It got SSD storage to boost your performance. It has 256GB SSD storage, there is an extra slot for the users who want more storage, I do not think for home computing you would want more storage than that. It is quite a good storage, enough for most of the students for storing images, files as well as business users.

It has 8GB RAM, to fits your computing needs.

Acer Aspire 5 laptop shares a 15.6 inches FHD IPS display. It got quite big bezels on the sides, the screen is Steller, which helps you enjoy binge-watching, streaming, watching YouTube videos, and even editing photos and videos, not Full HD videos though.

With a good number of ports options including 1 USB Type-C, 2 USB 3.1 GEN 1 Port, and one HDMI port to help you connect multiple computer peripherals at one time. The Type-C supports charging, so even if you lose your charger, use the Type-C port.

The keyboard is quite slimmer than usual, but the backlighting in the keys as well as the dedicated numpad in the keys help you handle numeric streams of data.

Good battery life of around 8-10 hours is another amazing aspect. It is good to have this laptop if you roam around, travel a lot, and want to take a good laptop with you to handle operations on the go.

If you are a parent and looking for a robust laptop that could take abuse through your kids and teens, do not go anywhere, buy Dell designed Inspiron series laptop.

It takes a bit of abuse and does not show off scratches and prints, its matte black textures finish does not show any smudges or prints, looks like a clean new laptop all the time.

It comes powered with an 11th Gen Intel Core i3-1115G1 processor. It is a dual-core processor that runs at 1.3 GHz base clock speed and goes up to 3.7 GHz in turbo-boosting.

With 8GB RAM and 1TB HDD storage, this laptop seems like a highway robbery. The RAM size is more than just for home computing or casual computing tasks. This size of RAM fits the needs of even high-end computing use, for gaming too if there is a good graphics card onboard.

Due to its SATA Storage type though, it takes longer to start. But it is 1TB storage, ample storage to store pictures, movies, videos, or other files for professionals.

Dell Inspiron Series’ latest laptop comes with a 15.6 inches FHD LED Backlit display. The display looks like a dream, helps you watch movies, edit videos and photos, and do anything you like.

With the availability of a pool of connectivity options, 2 USB 3.1 ports, one USB 2.0 Port, one HDMI port, and one RJ-45 Port, this makes quite impressive options for those who connect multiple computer peripherals at one time.

In total, this laptop got everything a user looking for using at home. It has a good Webcam, good specs, and everything you can ask for under a budget price range for casual computing.

ASUS VivoBook 15 Laptop Review:

If You are a business user who has to handle lots of business stuff like meetings, documents, browsing, and other stuff, this is the laptop you can rely on.

I reckon this laptop at this price is going to exceed your expectations, not only the screen, it’s built but the keys are going to amaze you with its performance.

It comes powered with a 10th Gen Intel Core i3 processor. Can you imagine buying a 10th Gen Core i3 processor under the $450 price range, the processor feels snappy and instantly loads anything I throw at it.

Keep in mind, that it is for home using, handling browsing, emailing, and other casual stuff we have to handle at home.

It has SSD storage, and enough RAM to help you do anything. No bloatware from Asus at all, it runs as smooth and flawless as you want it to.

I mentioned above that this laptop is going to exceed your expectations, it is because of its screen. The screen looks very bright and bigger than even 15 inches laptops due to the thin bezels around.

I am not saying the bezels are as thin as Zenbook 13 or Dell XPS 13, but for a cheap laptop display, they are plenty thin and enhance the viewing area.

Yes, it is an FHD display with IPS panels and anti-glare panels supports, enhanced viewing angles to help you watch movies, binge-watch, or watch YouTube Videos.

If you love to use an external keyboard, and mouse and like to connect your laptop to external screens, it got 4 USB Ports including one USB Type-C port. Yes, it is a 4 USB Ports laptop, which enhances your connectivity options.

For those who love to run lots of tabs in Firefox or Chrome, I checked this laptop with running zoom, Google Sheets, one dozen Chrome Tabs, and YouTube Streaming, the RAM utilization was around 70% and CPU utilization was at 50%.

This check was with 8GB RAM and 128GB SSD storage, you can upgrade the RAM as well as storage if you like.

It comes with Windows S mode which I liked very much, but as most of the users never used an S mode they find it extremely awful and find it hard to upgrade to Windows 10, which is very easy though, but the one-way road you can’t get back the S Mode if you upgrade with Windows 10.

[i2pc show_title=”false” title=”Pros & Cons” show_button=”false” pros_title=”Pros” cons_title=”Cons” ][i2pros]Extremely colorful and big display with thin bezels around
Soft Keys with good travel and backlight support
Windows S mode can be upgraded to Windows 10

10TH Gen Core i3 processor is snappy
4 USB Ports integrated
RAM as well storage is upgradable
[/i2pros][i2cons]You can’t install apps third-party apps in Windows S mode

Review:

Microsoft Surface Go is another good laptop for under $400 for Home Use. It is more like a tablet, comes with a Type-C cover for Typing and an adjustable Kickstand to help you adjust it to any position from notebook to Tablet and Tent mode, as per your requirements.

It is not a regular laptop, it is more like a tablet. For a home where you have to attend lots of zoom meetings or online classes or do webcamming, this is the best option with its Front-Facing and rear-facing HD Webcams to help you make crisp, clear calls to your family, friends, and for business.

As I mentioned it is not a regular laptop with a fixed keyboard. It has a Type-C cover that you can detach if you like or roll it on the back of the screen for typing, do not worry you can turn off the keyboard before rolling it back to prevent accidental touches or types.

It comes with Intel Pentium Gold 4425Y Processor. It is a dual-core processor, that renders enough good performance to help you do anything casual at home.

It also supports a digital Pen, for a digital artist or those who love to draw directly on the screen, or take notes on the screen, the digital Pen support is going to help a lot.

The display in itself is quite crispy. It is a 10.5 inches FHD screen with front and rear-facing HD Webcams. Yes, the bezels on the sides are thick, and it decreases the viewing area but it is a tablet-cum-laptop, bezels help it when you use it as a tablet.

It has three processors as well as RAM and storage variants to choose from. The variant we picked has 4GB RAM, and 64GB SSD storage, you can have an 8GB RAM variant if you think you handle lots of programs and apps at one time, and 4GB would not fit your needs.

The battery hours are also as good as they should be for a laptop. As per my experience and use, it holds up to 10 plus hours on one charge.

[i2pc show_title=”false” title=”Pros & Cons” show_button=”false” pros_title=”Pros” cons_title=”Cons” ][i2pros]Crisp, clearer, sharper Full HD Displays
Front-facing and rear-facing HD Webcams for smooth video calls

Supports digital Pen to help the drawing on the screen
[/i2pros][i2cons]The Type Cover price is not included

Lenovo IdeaPad 3 Laptop Review:

If you are looking for the best laptop for home use at the cheapest price possible with Windows 11 Home installed, Lenovo gives you the option, to get your hands on the model and enjoy super-smooth, error-free computing.

The first thing You love about this model is its snappy processor. It comes with RYZEN 5 5500 Processor, a hexa-core mobile processor with a 2.1 GHz base clock speed which goes up to 4.0 GHz in turbo-boosting. In terms of tasks handling, it surely going to blow you away.

Keep in mind, that it is a non-gaming laptop, a silent operator. It is not a gaming rig and one should not take it for the purpose, the best choice for home computing and light computing operations.

It has 8GB DDR4 RAM, one 4GB RAM is soldered to the motherboard, the other 4GB RAM is swappable, you can swap it with 8GB to make the overall memory up to 12GB RAM. The storage size is 256GB SSD, enough for fitting average storage needs.

It has a 14-inches FHD display. It is an LED display, colourful the bezels around the display are a bit bigger than modern laptops such as Zenbook 13 or Dell XPS 13 but for the price, I do not think you would ask for more.

Its Keyboard is from Heaven, keys are very soft dark graphite with a white backlit letter. It is very responsive and helps you type through your regular typing work.

It has good battery backup for home use. It lasts around 7-8 hours in one-time charging, yes for hard-core operations, the battery obviously would not last for 8-hours, still, it is good for home use.

It has One USB Type-C port, and one UB 2.0 Port, with an SD Card reader and Fingerprint scanner to help you get the best use of it.

I had only one complaint, it does not come with lots of USB Ports. It has only one USB Type-C port, and one USB 2.0 Port, which limits your productivity.

For instance, if you use an external keyboard and mouse, you would not have any space left for any other computer peripheral.

If you are looking for a cheap computer that, does it all for you, from home computing to video editing and from taking online classes to taking zoom meetings, buy HP designed Chromebook. Chromebooks are in trend these days; they are cheap and useful.

This Chromebook comes powered by a 10th Gen i3-10110U processor. It is an i3 processor Chromebook, got enough power to help you handle anything you like, from homeschooling to drawing, editing, webcamming anything you like.

Yes, here unlike Windows you can’t install apps from a third party, get apps access from the Chrome Web store or in some cases Android app store.

It is an 8GB RAM Chromebook and comes with 64GB eMMC storage to help you store files. This Chromebook also has SD Card reader support to help you extend the storage size.

It has 2 USB Type-C ports and one USB 2.0 Port to enhance your connectivity. One of the USB Type-C ports also supports charging, in case you lost your charger, you can use a C adapter to charge your laptop using the Type-C port.

Its most amazing, and helpful aspect is its Gorilla Glass Screen. It has 14 inches LED Backlight display with Gorilla glass. It makes the screen sturdier than other screens, prevents glares, and makes you enjoy a super clearer and sharper viewing experience.

I Loved its backlight keyboard which flips over the back of the display. The keyboard is good sized, enough for regular typing, there is no dedicated numpad though, still, the keyboard is one of the positive aspects of this 500 dollar Chromebook.

HP Laptop Review:

For those interested in non-gaming laptops, this is the best laptop you can buy for under 500 dollars.

It is a core i5 processor laptop, so it is something worth noticing to have an i5 processor laptop with 8GB Ram and 256GB SSD storage under a cheap price range.

This laptop is one of the fastest laptops you can use for home computing. It starts up within 8 seconds, due to the SSD storage it comes incorporated with. It got 256GB SSD storage, more than enough, and is required for basic computing operations at home.

It has bright 15.6 inches FHD Diagonal display. It got an anti-glaring panel to prevent you from glaring in the lights, due to the slim bezels around, the screen area gets enhanced to up to 82-percent screen to body ratio.

There are still pretty big bezels on the top and bottom, which could have further been reduced to enhance the viewing rea.

It also has an HD Webcam to support a seamless video conferencing or chatting experience. The charging hours are also great, lasts up to 6-hours, the charging time though takes around 2-hours in getting the battery fully charged.

It also has a good number of ports including one Type-C port, there is one HDMI Port and SD Card reader support, in case you want to connect to external monitors or want to use an SD Card to transfer files in or out of the laptop.

The only complaint I had is its clock speed. Although it has an I5 processor, its base clock speed is 1 GHz which is less than recommended for gaming.

That’s why I mentioned it as a non-gaming laptop, the fans also get loud when you put it on charging, without charging, they are silent.

Final Thoughts:

In this guide, we have gathered all great laptops for home which come under a budget price range. The mentioned laptops are great to use at home for basic computing operations.

You can get them for browsing, emailing, streaming, editing videos and images, taking online classes, doing camming, preparing assignments, and many more other operations.

Keep in mind, that these laptops are not for high-end operations, tasks such as Virtualization, 3D modelling, animation, rendering, and high-res video editing can’t be taken using these machines.

If you do most of the things online like preparing assignments, writing a research paper, taking online classes, and storing files in the cloud, you should go with a Chromebook.

Chromebooks are amazing, the only thing they do not support is Exe files or apps from a third party.
